Action figures for boys and fashion dolls for girls, well mainly that way around; as children these kind of toys let us play out adventures and fantasies with our characters, maybe sometimes we would imagine that we were these heroes and heroines in our own stories. Now though children or adults can have action figures made with their own heads on and with incredible detail. Currently the service is only available in Tokyo, Japan and costs $1770 to have done but that is probably going to change. The technology uses the latest 3D printing services as well as clever software that stitches together pictures from an array of digital cameras which accurately photograph every part of your head to make a 3D model to be sent to the 3D printing service. The 3D printed head will be the exact shape of yours as well as showing your face:it therefore isn't just a photo of your face crudely printed on to a standard head.

With the service as it is though the body is anything but accurate and this is partly the point:have your head put on to classic action figure bodies with rippling muscles or a storm trooper outfitjust two optionsthere are all sorts of characters and fashion dolls available, including anime style models as this is Japan. The company offering this service Clone Factory use a Zcorp Z printer, somewhat of a 3D printing service industry standard. The printer uses a non toxic powder and binder to create the 3D head. Once excess powder is removed you have a finished full color head with the face printed in high definition, both in terms of the color and the 3D detail. Whether this appeals to you or not this is perhaps a glimpse of the future and the kind of things that will be possible in future with 3D printing services. 3D printing services are perhaps going to be as big a game changer as the printing press and when they come into our homes as home 2D printers did in the 1980s and 1990s this may change things further still.

It is possible to estimate what will happen with this specific 3D printing service for action figures: right now you have to travel to Tokyo so other centers will pop up around the world, assuming the demand is there. As technology improves prices will come down and so the price tag will be something that more people will consider and the product could become a popular gift available from many toy stores and department stores. Eventually people will be able to set up their own cameras, use readily available software and use their own 3D printer to make their own models of themselves and will be able to be far more creative with the bodies of action figures, and also potentially figurines and other models or toys, than they could be with the current offering of action figures bodies. In fact expect 3D CAD software to be as usable and as used by the future's teenagers as desktop publishing and word processors are now with 3D printers sitting alongside 2D printers, if paper copies haven't been supplanted by electric ink.
